A bad at the office for DK a 57-8 defeat to rivals Bromsgrove, and that was eight tries to one. Though, the first quarter promised a much closer game or was the writing on the wall already, DK made a positive start to the game, but that was brought to an abrupt end when the Bromsgrove back row stole the ball and a swift counter attack gave the home side a 5-0 lead. Though, DK broke the hold that Bromsgrove exerted after the kick-off, when full back Nick Adams made a good break out of the DK 22 when he cutting back inside his man and continuing his run into the Bromsgrove half, and he then offloaded in the tackle to Stef Shillingford who drove the move on and earned a penalty for DK in front of the posts but some way out. Sam Vaughan was called to kick for goal, he was successful and the score was 7-3 to Bromsgrove.
There is a falling away into the farthest corner away from the clubhouse and the Bromsgrove side started to build up momentum using the slope to their advantage, and added a second try converted this time to make the score 12-3 on 26 minutes.
Bromsgrove were on top at this time but the DK back three with the help of Jordan Brookes put in some well-timed tackles on both flanks, Tommy Walker, on the DK right certainly put in two try saving tackles, and left wing Leo Davies tackled equally hard and had to leave the field with a cut to his head, he was replaced by Joe Dunn making his debut, who acquitted himself well having to play on the wing out of position for an hour.
DK started to claw themselves back into the game, though mainly through their defensive work, but with time running down at the end of the first half, Bromsgrove were able to cross for a third try, which was probably the killer blow, that extra seven points was vital.
So it was 19-3 at half time, if ever a half time speech was required it was now.
It wasn’t to be in fact Bromsgrove had two more tries to make it 33-3, before DK threatened when Nick Adams made a good break through the Bromsgrove defence, but his offload was knocked-on metres from the try line.
Bromsgrove added a further try, before Jordan Brookes and Stef Shillingford mounted a swift counter attack which was forced into touch, in the Bromsgrove 22.
Bromsgrove added two further tries, 57-3.
Then, DK mounted a late comeback, which saw a scrum deep in the Bromsgrove half lead to front foot play by DK, an offside penalty was quickly taken by Jordan Brookes who drove into the retreating defence followed by a clever kick over the defenders that saw loose head prop Jake Thompson leap and catch and fall to the ground over the line. (No it was really a 50metre run with several side steps and a hand off, well that will be the version retold later). That was Jake’s first try for the first team.
With a Friday night fixture against Droitwich at Heathbrook next weekend, Neil and the coaches will have some analysis and thinking to do to get the team ready for that game.
