In the news article “A beginner guide to Rugby – 1947” it was stated that the information shown was found in a box. Tantalisingly, in that box was a small label that had obviously fallen off a book. It said something like Committee Minutes May 1920 to 1921.

We believed our club started in September 1920, oh what a find this would be! So, back to storage, a quick rummage and guess what, there it was!

So what? I hear you ask, old books, committee meetings, pretty boring eh?

Well no, open the cover and there it is, on the very first page, a group of 16 guys sitting in the Tipton staff canteen of Harper Bean Ltd making a decision, a unanimous agreement to start a Rugby Football Club, nearly 100 years ago and ultimately to become DKRFC.

The book goes on with more meetings, where to play, what about shirts etc etc. Then the pages go blank, until you go to the back of the book and start from the back page. Bit’s and bobs about admin then a record of every match played through the seasons 1920/1921 and 1921/1922. Opposition, the players, the scores, half time and at full time, the scorers and what refreshments the players had after the game! Many of them detail the monies collected and what had to be paid for.

So much confusion, but fear not, “History Bob” is on the case. 2 boxes of old books and papers to go through, it is going to take a while but just an initial scan shows some wonderful facts about our formation and growth, to where we are now.

Our first recorded match, according to this book, was on Saturday October 9th 1920 v Birmingham (Away), however, information on the wall in the clubhouse (taken from the records of Fred Fry, a founding member and who is on the team sheet on the left) states that our first game as Dudley RFC was on September 17th 1920 at the County Ground Dudley v Camp Hill, this new source states that we were playing in Tipton? The book has the answer. We did play Camp Hill on the 17th September but in 1921, as the record said, our first game as Dudley RFC, for the whole of the first season (1920/21) we played as Harper Bean RFC in Tipton.
