Cliff Davey (1930 - 2019)
It is with great sadness that the Club announces the death of former Club President, Cliff Davey who passed away earlier this week.
Cliff became aware of the existence of DKRFC, when on a foggy afternoon in November 1946, aged 16, he reported to our old ground at Penzer Street, Kingswinford to play in a school boy County trial. He was not very impressed. The pitch had a terrible slope, the grass was long, the changing rooms were draughty, the showers were not very efficient, and the groundsman rattled his money box in a most aggressive manner. Soon afterwards, and unlike most of his school friends who joined some 'other' local club, he became a member of DK in early 1947.
His first game in the 1st XV was played at Handsworth circa 1950-51 season and in later years he was captain of the 2nd and 3rd XV's.
Over the years, Cliff supported the Club in a number of administrative posts including Chairman of the Selection Committee, Match Secretary, Hon. Secretary of the Club, Club President for 1975-76 season through to the end of the 1976-77 season and was appointed a Life Member of the Club in 1978.
Without question, Cliff was the Club's oldest and longest serving member and he will be sorely missed by all at the Club. Our sincere condolences go to Cliff's family at this sad time.
In honour of Cliff's dedication to the Club, there was a 'minutes silence' prior to kick off at the last home game of the season on Saturday 13 April.
